Color Life – Building Our Interactive Digital Sculpture for FIGMENT 2013

Color Life – Building Our Interactive Digital Sculpture for FIGMENT 2013

After last year’s amazing group project at Hack Manhattan, which we took to FIGMENT, we decided to do it all again in 2013, and this year we’ve gone one better. Last year was a 1 or 2 player game, this year is a zero player game. Well, maybe somewhere between 0 and 21,000, as FIGMENT participants will be able to touch and modify the outcome, but there won’t be any winners or losers.

Color Life is a variant of Conway’s Game of Life, but in our version it is played in color on a large physical hexagonal lattice arranged in the shape of a carbon nanotube. Observers can touch the circuitry and change the states of an individual cellular automaton, changing one edge color and thus affecting the fate of all the other cells.

UPDATE: It’s finished! Here’s a video of the build process. Thanks everyone for your help!
